Alberto de Campo has studied classical composition, jazz guitar, and electronic music in Austria and the US. After working at UC Santa Barbara, designing experimental software instruments with Curtis Roads, he taught at Media Arts Academy Cologne, the Institute for Electronic Music in Graz, and at TU Berlin. He held a professorship for Music Informatics at Music University Duesseldorf, and now is Professor for Generative Art at Arts University Berlin. He plays with powerbooks_unplugged (just in time programming on mostly unamplified laptops); improvisers/groups with acoustic instruments such as Elisabeth Harnik, Quiet Noise Quartet, Syntopia Ensemble, and ad hoc constellations; and analog electronic music with BlippooHazard (four musicians playing the Blippoo Box, a hardware synth by Rob Hordijk). Recent projects include creating software instruments and sound installations with Florian Hecker, e.g. ‘No Night No Day’ at Biennale Venice, and AuditoryObjects (Bordeaux), and collaborating with Marcus Schmickler and Carsten Goertz on “Bonner Durchmusterung”, a project involving sonification und visualisation of astronomical data.

Mario de Vega is a Sound Artist from Mexico City actually based in Berlin. His work explores relations between stability, failure, simulation and ambiguity with site-specific projects, sculpture, projects for documentation and sound improvisation with electronic devices.
Performing both solo and in collaboration, his work involves a wide range of modified electronics, turntables and computer based interfaces in different combinations. Unpredictable situations caused by the manipulation of fragile objects and the potential of their failure using motors, magnets, acoustic surfaces and electronic devices.
His work has appeared in different contexts including Museums, Galleries, Clubs and Concert Halls throughout Mexico, Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland, The Netherlands, United States, Japan, Argentina, Korea and Spain.

(Liondialer)

Liondialer is the project of English experimental musicians Greg Haines and Danny Saul. Spread between Berlin (Haines) and Manchester (Saul), the duo perform entirely improvised pieces often using acoustic guitar, cello and laptops as the basis for their sound.
Their debut album ‘Liondialer LIVE!’ was released on White Box earlier this year, and is a continuous sequence of music culled from hours of recordings captured in and around Manchester’s least welcoming environments for experimental music. Following the release, Liondialer embarked on a three week tour of Europe, resulting in collaborations with Jasper TX, Jan Kleefstra, El Magnitophono, Daniel Lercher and Brian Mitchell among others.
Following the success of his debut album ‘Slumber Tides’ (Miasmah), Haines is currently completing work on a second solo album to be released next year on Sonic Pieces. Saul’s debut solo album ‘Harsh, Final.’ is released on the 26th October on White Box. The album was recently made record of the month by Gonzo Circus magazine.

“They lift poetry to another level.” – Rudy Hodel, conservator Frisian Museum 6 juni 2008, theater Romein
Jan Kleefstra is fascinated by landscape. The empty middle of it. And the elements and their interaction with landscapes and how he as a small, vulnerable human being is aware of these things and how it impresses him and makes him humble.
He writes ‘fragments’ about inlands between lakes and near the sea, about swamps, skies, sun and rain, trees and birds, and the melancholic sense perceptions of it. And because words about land and water are vulnerable, especially when the relationship with it is fragile, he doesn’t want the words to hit the ground and be trampled down by people after leaving his voice. That’s why he recitates on soundscapes. Romke Kleefstra, his brother is the musician. The sounds of the music are strong enough to bear the words and take them to safer places. The sounds have to create a spacial, silent atmosphere.
They played together sofar with others like Machinefabriek, Soccer Committee, Greg Haines, Danny Saul, Bela Emerson, Tex la Homa and Anne Chris Bakker. Jan & Romke also co-operate with other forms of art like (seascape) painting and cinematographics.

The work of Claudio Rocchetti is a deep plunge into thick sound, investigating its innermost workings. Using a variety of devices such as turntables, audio cassettes, samplers, radios, and microphones, often incorporating other objects and traditional instruments, Berlin-based Rocchetti builds compelling structures that employ sound as sheer matter, mass, and impact. The tarry, mesmerizing hues that characterize his “music objects” are grounded in layers of sound detritus.
From techno rhythms to slow melodies, edgy constructions to samples of choirs and strings, Rocchetti builds layered structures of elusive elements whose sources are often hidden, and enacts a mirror play which may cause dizziness.

If you turn the binocular and look from the other side, everything is so far away –
we discovered that playing Bossa in Berlin makes the Bossa feel like Telebossa – so don’t be suprised if you feel the music more like Berlin than Brazil. To put it into magazine-style words: it’s bossa played like a Schubert string quartet with a minimal Berlin fundament.

THE INSTITUTE FOR INTERMEDIATE STUDIES – FLUXKONZERT #8
a.k.a. THE KNOT SHOW
The question “whereof free?“ in the question “what for free?” becomes the secret connection in a obscurantistic enmeshment, which now must be cutted like a Gordian knot…(V. Flusser, von der Freiheit des Migranten – IIS free translation).
Knots have been the subject of interest for their ancient origins, common uses, mathematical and social applications. Professional dilettantish experts from the Institute for Intermediate Studies (IIS) explain and untie different kinds of knots. Bring your own knot, make one here. If you don’t like knots or you don’t want to have it, you don’t really need to come.
Ropes, texts, rags, ties, cords, sounds, doughs, textiles, books, paper, strings, notes, bodies, videos: KNOTS.

The IIS is a dynamical group of performers with an expecial interest on revivals and new.
The group exists since February 2008 and is active in Berlin and Boston.
Members: A.S., J.T., D.M., C.W., J.O., I.G.M, J.P.…and so on.

“Turn him to any cause of policy,
The Gordian Knot of it he will unloose,
Familiar as his garter”
(Rafael Anton Irisarri)

Rafael Anton Irisarris placid compositions consist for the most part of repetitive motifs containing submerged melodic lines performed on the piano, glockenspiel and melodica. Reverb-drenched guitar textures, drones, field recordings, strings and minimal electronic counterpoints all contribute and converge equally in the music to create an oceanic experience that can be both epic and subdued. His music has been described by The Wire contributing writer Jefferson Petrey as “a dual perspective close-up focus on the micro textures of rustling static-filled sonic surfaces with the wide-open distant tree lined horizons of sunset at dusk.”

(Src: Wikipedia)

Brooklyn quartet Little Women formed two years ago to create music that blurs the line between structure and spontaneity. The group’s sound distilled from a broad range of influences that stretch from classic Chicago free jazz thru pop music, punk rock, math metal, and harsh noise. Little Women never stop pushing into new sonic territory: splitting overtones to create ghost notes, violently disassembling their instruments onstage, and attacking written and improvised material with equal ferocity. During performances band members often experience side-effects more commonly associated with prescription drugs such as nausea, dizziness, and internal bleeding. Little Women stomp all over genres, creating some of the most adventurous, in-the-moment, wrenchingly honest music of their generation.

Together they will form a tapestry of loops, cuts, beats and rhymes that will be forward thinking and extremely engaging.

Aquarellmalerei in Sansibar?

The workshop will be teaching Danceobics, the fusion of dance and aerobics , born from the bordom and love of dance and aerobics. rHonda is the World Aerobics Champion of 1991.
It is her life’s mission to make Danceobics a global phenomen , up there with yogalaties, breakpump and gothic bellydance, and to let everyone now that they are beautiful!

Noema is the alter ego of guitarist, DJ, composer, producer and event manager David Günther.
His musical journey started when he was six years old with guitar lessons. He would later also go on to receive training in piano playing, jazz guitar and music theory. After completing his school education he took up studying classical guitar at the “Hanns Eisler” Academy of Music in Berlin. Besides this main topic, his studies are primarily focused on compositional technique and analysis, both of which were required for his thesis: a composition for chamber music ensemble and ventilators, which he will play as a recording this night.
In addition to his involvement in classical music, David has furthermore worked as a studio guitarist for Daniel Wang, Apparat, Basement Jaxx, Crowdpleaser and Dutch Rhythm Combo, as well as collaborating on a number of songs with Roberta Sweed (Mahagoni Music – Detroit). He is furthermore a live band member of „Wahoo“, a project run by DJ Dixon and Georg Levin, jointly with whom David recently also recorded Georgs new Solo Album (coming soon on BBE Records).
Not long after his first DJing engagement in 1997, David in 1999 also started organizing events himself. His DJ sets are known for their sexy, deep and hypnotic flavour ranging from disco and pop to house and techno, combined in a highly energetic mix.

Kris Membrane started DJing in 1992 under the moniker DJ Sunrise that he dropped 10 years later. Started with House and Techno. Played late Jungle and early D&B with Nomad as Sunrise & Nomad in now long dead locations like Ultraschall and Mojo-Club. After moving to Berlin in 1999 his euphoria switched to UK-Garage and 2-Step. Then stopped DJing for a while after the next bubble called Broken Beats bursted in 2002. Loved grime but didn’t really know what to do with it. Seen Dubstep grow and getting shock-frosted.
Now plays Post-Dubstep and gets really passionate when things sound like UK-Funky!

Clement Nourry
